The Meaning of ETNI

ETNI combines two words: “EK” (Mayan for "star") and “NIDO” (Spanish for "nest").

“EK” symbolizes the universe and the unique brilliance of each artisan in a constellation of creativity.
“NIDO” represents a nurturing space where talents thrive, fostering a supportive and prosperous community.

Together, ETNI embodies a radiant collective of dreamers and creators.

Soy Maria Magdalena una mujer de origen maya kaqchikel. Tengo 22 años y me considero una mujer luchadora que trabaja duro para alcanzar sus sueños y nunca dejarse por vencida. Soy una mujer alegre y sociable a la que le gusta compartir sus conocimientos. Vivo a orillas del lago Atitlán, en Santa Catarina Palopó, un pueblo hermoso y colorido. Soy la menor de mi familia; tengo dos hermanos y una hermana. Mis padres son artesanos; mi madre teje y mi papá realiza marcos de postales tipicos. Me encanta leer, estudiar matemáticas y guiar. Mi mayor logro fue cuando guie a los embajadores de estados unidos y ganar una beca actualmente estudio relaciones internacionales.

WHAT ARE SOME POPULAR GUATEMALAN CRAFTS?

Guatemala is known for its woodwork, volcanic stonework, embroidery, weaving, ceramics and wool work. In Santa Catarina, on the shores of Lake Atitlán, we excel in weaving, sewing and embroidery.
The colours we use - blue, red, light blue and purple - are inspired by the beauty of the lake. Women around the area wear the clothing they make; it's a proud expression of their craft.
WHY DID YOU OPEN YOUR STORE IN SANTA CATARINA?

Many here are losing faith in their craft, taking jobs that don't require as much time and effort. I decided to help. While the concept store is a vibrant stop, the real magic happens in the other half of my studio, where items for my new decor brand for babies, ETNI, are sewn by local women. It's a space where they have can thrive, fostering prosperity through art.

WHAT CRAFTS SHOULD TRAVELLERS LOOK OUT FOR?

We feature items from Guatemalan regions known for their artisanal traditions and partner with brands that promote art as a means of creating personal growth. You'll find organic wool blankets, funky pillows, fun tableware and even artisanal ice cream.
