The Meaning of ETNI

ETNI combines two words: “EK” (Mayan for "star") and “NIDO” (Spanish for "nest").

“EK” symbolizes the universe and the unique brilliance of each artisan in a constellation of creativity.
“NIDO” represents a nurturing space where talents thrive, fostering a supportive and prosperous community.

Together, ETNI embodies a radiant collective of dreamers and creators.

Alicia

Meet Alicia, a master artisan from Panajachel, Sololá, whose deep passion for embroidery shines through every thread. A resilient mother, Alicia raised her three children on her own after becoming a widow 27 years ago. Today, seeing her children flourish as young professionals serves as her constant motivation to keep learning, grow her skills, and pursue dreams she once put on hold.

Over the years, Alicia has trained in primary education, embroidery, basic culinary arts, and leadership—knowledge she generously shares to uplift others in her community. When she isn't crafting, she loves cooking for her family, enjoying a quiet moment with an ice cream, and giving back through her local church.

Katy

Maria Sajvin

Bright, determined, and deeply connected to her Kaqchikel Maya heritage, 22-year-old Maria calls the colorful lakeside village of Santa Catarina Palopó home. Raised in a family of artisans—with a mother who weaves and a father who crafts traditional postcard frames—creativity and hard work run in her blood.

Maria is a joyful, outgoing spirit who loves bringing people together and sharing her culture. Driven to reach new heights, she balances her love for math and reading with local tour guiding. Her remarkable work ethic has already opened incredible doors: she previously guided visiting U.S. ambassadors, earned a competitive scholarship, and is currently pursuing a degree in International Relations.

Born and raised in Guatemala, Katy is a creative soul with a lifelong passion for art, design, and storytelling. Her journey truly took shape during her time at the Whitney Museum in New York, where she became fascinated not just by the artwork itself, but by the deeply personal human stories behind every piece.

Today, Katy blends her experience in high design with her love for Guatemalan heritage. Her mission comes to life on the shores of Lake Atitlán—a place she calls the most beautiful on earth—where she builds a supportive community for local artisans and shines a light on the incredible, untold stories behind their craft.

WHAT ARE SOME POPULAR GUATEMALAN CRAFTS?

Guatemala is known for its woodwork, volcanic stonework, embroidery, weaving, ceramics and wool work. In Santa Catarina, on the shores of Lake Atitlán, we excel in weaving, sewing and embroidery.
The colours we use - blue, red, light blue and purple - are inspired by the beauty of the lake. Women around the area wear the clothing they make; it's a proud expression of their craft.
WHY DID YOU OPEN YOUR STORE IN SANTA CATARINA?

Many here are losing faith in their craft, taking jobs that don't require as much time and effort. I decided to help. While the concept store is a vibrant stop, the real magic happens in the other half of my studio, where items for my new decor brand for babies, ETNI, are sewn by local women. It's a space where they have can thrive, fostering prosperity through art.

WHAT CRAFTS SHOULD TRAVELLERS LOOK OUT FOR?

We feature items from Guatemalan regions known for their artisanal traditions and partner with brands that promote art as a means of creating personal growth. You'll find organic wool blankets, funky pillows, fun tableware and even artisanal ice cream.
